Where Can I Start A Blog ? – And Is It A Good Idea?

Blog concept in word tag cloud

The dream of working at home can really sound romantic these days. Sitting in your pajamas on the couch with your laptop. Eating snacks and making your own hours. No boss to harp on you or co-workers to annoy you.

No rules or deadlines and you can take vacation time whenever you want. This makes a lot of people think, “where can I start a blog”? And when?

If you have kids you can get up with them in the morning and get them dressed and fed, pack them a lunch and drive them to school. Pick them up at the end of the day and never have to worry about working late again.

Have dinner on the table and a clean house because you’ve been home all day. Work a few hours, take a break. Do some house work then do another hour of work on the laptop.

Go to the grocery store and get what you need for dinner. Come home and get dinner ready. Pick up the kids and get them fed and ready for soccer. Take them to soccer and watch the whole match with enthusiasm. All while your website is working for you and making money for you on auto-pilot.

Is It Really That Wonderful??

Well it’s actually not quite like that. In fact it can truly be grueling and lonely so before you start thinking the grass is greener on the other side, please read carefully.

Now instead, picture this. You’re all alone at home(again) and you’re dying for someone to talk to. you desperately hope that your neighbor is in the mood to chat when you go out to grab the mail.

You talk to your dog far more often and in-depth than any healthy person ever should. You count down the hours until you can pick up the kids or do anything that involves some sort of human interaction.

Your procrastination get’s the best of you and you end up watching way too much daytime television while snacking on foods that kill your motivation and your self-esteem.

You start to consider having a beer or glass of wine out of boredom but it’s only 2PM. You slowly turn into a hermit and you don’t know how it happened so fast.

Couch Potato Watching TV

Okay so this is a worst case scenario and this doesn’t happen to everyone. But the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It’s not as if we’re all cut out for working from home.

The biggest hurdle I have with my home based business is discipline. Yes I love what I do and yes I am passionate about it but sometimes that’s not enough. There’s always other things that need to be done whether it’s mow the lawn or vacuum the house.

I can always think of things that I could or should be doing and that often pulls me away from my business. I’ll go one day without working on my website and then another and another, next thing I know I’ve almost forgotten about it altogether.

Then I get this extreme guilt and anxiety that I’ve neglected my website and I’m going to go broke and I need to get back to work. So then I go to the other extreme and I work like a crazy person for 5 days straight. It’s a fine balance trying to mix work with home life.

How Do People Do It?

There is a way around all of this but it requires discipline and persistence.

You Need A Schedule

Yes I know, that takes some of the charm out of working from home. The whole idea of working from home is great because you don’t have a schedule. Well newsflash, you do.

If I don’t have a schedule then I’ll fall into that depressing routine of getting fat and doing nothing very quickly. Not only do you need a schedule but you also need to seperate work from home life.

That might mean having an office space or just a desk or spot where you do all of your work. So when your shcedule is telling you that you should be working, you need to be in that designated spot and you need to be working.

If your lawn needs to be mowed, it will have to wait until after work. If you haven’t planned dinner yet and there’s no food in the fridge, you’ll have to do it after work. Just like a normal job.

Here’s What I Do

I make a physical schedule so that I have structure in my day. I wake up and I have written tasks that need to be completed each day. I start at the top of the list and I work my way through it until it’s complete.

Some days it takes me 8 hours and others it takes me 3 hours, everyday is different.

That’s where the benefits come in. Not everyday has to be 9-5 like a typical job. As long as I’ve finished all of my tasks for the day then I am fine to call it a day and then I have time to take care of household duties or family/personal stuff.

Is This The Life For You?

So if you’ve ever wondered if working from home is something you’d enjoy or if it’s even possible for you, maybe this article was helpful.

There are many different ways to make money at home and it doesn’t have to be a blog/website but in my opinion that’s the best way by far.

The reason I say a blog/website is the best way to make money at home is because there are so many different ways to monotize it. You can use ads or sell physical items or do affiliate sales.

All of these ways to make money with a blog or website are great because they’re sustainable and reliable and better yet, they’re attainable for anyone with an internet connection.

You might not know if you have what it takes to do this or you maybe wonder, “where can I start a blog”? Well you can do it all in the same place that I did it.

Wealthy Affiliate

The reason I recommend Wealthy Affiliate is because they can turn anybody into a full time money making blogger. Before I discovered WA I knew nothing about the internet at all and now I’m making a full living(and a good living) from my websites and blogs.

If your interested in starting your own online business you should have a look at what they have to offer. It’s the best training in the business and they let you try it for free. Yes they actually let you build 2 websites for free so that you can find out if it’s something you can see yourself doing full time.
