TranscribeMe Review

In this review I'll show you what it's like working as a transcriptionist at TranscribeMe.

There are a lot of questions that people have when considering transcription as a way to make money from home and I'll do my best to answer them all in this review.

The topics I'll focus on in this review are:

  • what does a transcriber do
  • how does transcribeMe work
  • how much money can you make at TranscribeMe
  • how long does it take to make money at TranscribeMe
  • how much time does it take to make money
  • what skill level(if any) is required
  • how do you qualify for TranscribeMe
  • what languages does this work for
  • are there complaints about TranscribeMe
  • what are the benefits of TranscribeMe
  • is TranscribeMe a good opportunity
  • Is it good for beginners

So read on to learn all about this company and of course the world of transcription from home.

What Is Transcription?

Transcription is when you listen to an audio or video file and then type out what you hear in words using a word processor or other software.

Sometimes you'll be listening to a single person speak, sometimes it's two people having a conversation and sometimes it's a group of people.

Often you have to add side notes to the conversation for things like laughter, applause or music but aside from that it's a pretty simple job.

Although it's a simple task, not all transcription companies will hire people without any experience but TranscribeMe does so that's good news for all you beginners out there.

How Does TranscribeMe Work?

This is one of the few companies that doesn't require any previous transcription experience which makes it a good opportunity for regular people to make some extra money from home.

To get started at TranscribeMe you simply have to go to the website and click on the, "Join As Transcriptionist" button.

Then you just fill out a brief form with some information about yourself.

Nothing to personal just things like Name, Email, Country, language etc.

Once you've completed the sign up form you'll be shown a short video. Make sure you pay attention to the video because after the video you'll have to complete and exam and the video provides some helpful information.

The exam is pretty easy.

The exam is a 15 second audio file that they ask you to transcribe.

The good news is that you can pause or rewind it many times as long as you're finished within 5 minutes.

Immediately after completing the exam it will be graded.

If you've passed the exam you'll automatically be entered into the system and you can start looking for jobs right away.

If you fail the exam you'll have to wait another 6 months before you can try it again.

What Does TranscribeMe Pay

The pay will all depend on how fast you are.

They pay based on the time of the audio that you transcribe. It's a rate of $20 per hour of audio file.

That basically means that the faster you can type, the better your hourly rate will be.

They claim that their highest earner makes $2200 per month and the average earner makes $250 a month.

So there are some people doing pretty well with this. I imagine that even if you're fast at typing there would still be a little bit of a learning curve.

I'm sure you can get better with practice.

Another thing to think about is that there are all sorts of different accents that you'll be transcribing so if you're not good at deciphering accents you might struggle with this.

Payments are made weekly through Paypal.

What Are The Requirements?

There are a few requirements that you should know about but nothing too crazy so most people should qualify for this.

The basic requirements are that you are able to type, that you have a computer and high speed internet.

Other than that the only thing you'll need is a Paypal account because that's the only way they pay.

It doesn't matter what country you live in because TranscribeMe is available worldwide.

It's a good idea to have a headset because it makes the job easier but this is not a requirement.

The vast majority of the audio files are in English so being fluent in English is your best chance at making decent money here but they do offer files in many other languages.

What Languages Are Offered?

Aside from English you can find audio files in Spanish, Portuguese(European and Brazilian dialects), Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, German, French and Italian.

So if you don't speak English but you speak one of these other languages you can still make a go of it.

With that being said you should be aware that there aren't as many jobs in those languages so you'll be a little bit limited.

Are There Complaints?

As with most online companies there are some complaints about TranscribeMe.

I went to Glassdoor to see what other people had to say and actually most of the reviews are quite positive but the negative ones were all pretty similar.

Here's a positive one I found....

So this person seems to really love working for TranscribeMe. Can't really argue with that but let's talk more about the complaints and negative reviews.

Below is a screenshot of a complaint that was a pretty common theme with a lot of the complaints I found about them.

The pay sucks. If you read through all of the negative reviews this is probably the most common thing you'll read.

Some people even say that they can type 70-80 words per minute and that they still can only earn $5/hour with TranscribeMe.

Another common complaint I read is that there aren't a lot of jobs.

This is actually something I noticed when I signed up too. I started looking and there was just nothing. After refreshing the page every 5 minutes or so I finally found a job.

From reading the website it seems like there is an unlimited amount of jobs so this was a little bit of a surprise to me and it seems like it is to a lot of other people as well.

Another complaint that I read a lot is that a lot of the audio files are fuzzy and hard to understand.

They say that if you listen to them 5-10 times you might be able to figure out what they're saying but then you're eating up a lot of time which lowers your hourly rate.

Benefits Of TranscribeMe

Obviously there are some benefits to this company or nobody would be doing it and there wouldn't be any positive feedback online.

The biggest benefit that I can see is that a complete beginner can start doing this today and start earning actual money within 15 minutes.

The sign up process is simple and there is no complicated screening process.

Another benefit of this program is that you can actually work your way up the ladder within the company.

If you complete a lot of audio files and you have a good record with the company there are some roles that you can get with them that will even pay you a salary.

QA Quality Assurance

The first position you can qualify for is QA.

As a QA your job will be to check the work of transcriptionists and make sure they're up to snuff.

This one doesn't pay a salary but it's a lot easier than transcribing and it does pay better.

Project Manager, Recruiter and Customer Service

Once you've proven yourself as a QA you might get the opportunity to move into a salary position as either a project manager, recruiter or in customer service.

They don't say what these positions pay but I would imagine it would be a decent upgrade from the QA pay.

Is TranscribeMe A Good Opportunity?

This all depends on a few things.

Since they pay in US currency this could be a very good opportunity if you live in a country where the currency is worth much less.

Since TranscribeMe is available world wide it might work out great for someone who has a good handle on the English language but lives abroad.

The $4/hour that Americans are complaining about might be an ok wage with a positive exchange rate.

TranscribeMe certainly is not a scam. It's a totally legitimate company with a good reputation so you don't have to worry about them not paying you or selling your information.

With that being said, I personally won't be doing it any more because I don't feel like the hourly rate I can make with it is sufficient.

Final Thoughts

I can't say that I hate this company. All I can say is that it's not a good use of time in my opinion.

I've been making money online doing affiliate marketing for 3 years now and there's no comparison which one is better.

With affiliate marketing you have your own website and when you have a profitable website it makes money for you 24 hours a day even when you are sleeping or on holiday.

Not to mention the sky is the limit in terms of how much money you can make with affiliate marketing.

I did some transcription work for different companies a few years back and made a few dollars but as soon as I discovered affiliate marketing I never looked back.

If you're interested to see where I learned how to make money as an affiliate marketer you can get all the info right here

So that's it for my review. TranscribeMe is not a scam but it certainly isn't a good way to make a steady living online.

Thanks for stopping by.
