The Benefits Of Working From Home

The benefits of working from home are really fantastic. So to me the phrase “working from home”, doesn’t necessarily mean that I have to be at home.

I can work from anywhere with an internet connection. That’s what it means to me. It’s the freedom to work where I want and when I want.

I know that before I started earning money from my website I only dreamed of being able to work from home. I actually didn’t think it would ever be a possibility for me.

I really didn’t have any special skills or knowledge that would allow me to do any type of work from home, I thought. Then I discovered Wealthy Affiliate and it taught me that I really could make working from home a reality.

When I first became a member at Wealthy Affiliate I thought it sounded really interesting and at the very least it could be a good hobby for me.

It took me a little bit of reading and research to figure out what exactly Wealthy Affiliate was and how it was going to help me. Not to mention my paranoia telling me that it might actually be a scam.

So I’m a bit of a slow learner and after a day or 2 I realized that Wealthy Affiliate teaches people how to build a website about one of their passions or interests and make money from that website.

One of my passions is fitness so I decided to sign up for the membership and start building a website about fitness and more specifically home fitness.

It was free to sign up and try it out so at that point I knew that even if it was a scam, they didn’t even have my credit card number so my money was safe.

I was half expecting a whole bunch of  up-sells and hidden costs so it was a nice surprise to see that there were actually none of those.

I dove right into the training and started learning rapidly. I loved the step-by-step training and the community support because it made it so easy to figure everything out without getting stuck.

After my first week I decided to upgrade to the premium membership because I knew this was a real opportunity and I didn’t want to give it up. I was really enjoying it. The premium membership is $19 for the first month and then $47 per month after that. Money well spent.

After about 3 months my fitness website was getting a lot of traffic and starting to generate some money through affiliate sales and adsense.

I was over the moon. I kept working at it and believe me I worked hard at it. You can’t succeed in affiliate marketing without putting in a lot of work.

Now I’m doing it full-time and making a better income than I ever imagined I would. So let’s talk about all the benefits of working from home.

1. Choose my own hours

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about what I love about working from home is the fact that I can choose my own hours.

I can work anytime I want. If I feel like sleeping in that’s totally fine. I can start work later on as long as I leave myself enough time to complete what needs to be done.

If a friend or family member needs help with something I’m always there for them. Since I don’t have a strict schedule I can always make myself available to help someone out. This could be viewed as a pitfall to some people.

Sometimes I have trouble sleeping at night so I grab my laptop and do a little bit of work until I’m ready to fall asleep again. This is great because since I did a little extra work at night, I can then sleep in because I don’t have to do as much the next day.

2. Work wherever I want

beachI like this picture because it’s always been a dream of mine to be able to make money while on holiday.

You can tell that’s not me in the picture because I don’t wear bikinis and I’m not a woman but either way, it’s a nice picture.

I haven’t actually sat on a beach while working on my laptop before but I’m going to make it a goal of mine.

However I have travelled a lot and taken my laptop with me on holiday. Having my laptop with me allows me to extend my trip because I’m able to be productive while away from home.

3. Travel and vacation when I want

Since I work from home and I don’t have a strict schedule I’m able to go on holiday whenever I want. I don’t need to book time off or build up vacation days in order to get away.

I can literally just up and leave anytime I want. This is total freedom.

4. Spend time with family

Working from home allows me to spend plenty of time with my family and friends. Anytime my wife has a day off from her job, I take the day off too. Whenever she’s home from work I quit for the day too.

It allows us to have the same hours so that we can speand a lot of time together. We don’t have any kids but if we did I could stay home with the kids and just get work done when they are alseep. I would be able to spend plenty of time with my kids.

We have a dog so I’m able to give her plenty of walks and runs. She really is spoiled.

5. Live in any city I want

I currently live in the same city I grew up in. I live here because I love living here and I like to be close to all of my family and friends. But this is a choice.

If I wanted I could move to any city in the world. With the ability to work from home, the location of your home really doesn’t matter.

Sometimes I dream of living places like New York City or San Francisco and although I could do it, I guess I’m a home body. Maybe I’ll work towards a second home or a condo somewhere cool.

6. No stress

It’s pretty hard to get stressed out when you run a website from home. I get up inthe morning, have a nice breakfast, walk the dog, get some exercise. Then I finally sit down and start working while sipping on a nice cup of coffee.

What could be stressful about that? Absolutley nothing.

7. Pursue my passions

This allows me to research and write all the time about one of my biggest passions in life, fitness. I not only love reading and writing about fitness but I also learn a lot more about it since I’m constantly digging around for new products and information.

I’m even considering starting another website on a different passion of mine. I don’t have to sit in an office drudging through piles of paperwork on a topic that bores me. My work days fly by and I never watch the clock.

8. No boss

Angry bossI don’t have a boss. I don’t have someone breathing down my neck trying to push me to work harder.

I don’t have pressure on me or any deadlines except the ones I choose for myself.

I don’t ever have to worry about being fired. Enough said.

9. House work

This one might seem a little odd to some people because I know not everyone likes to do house work as much as I do. Some of you probably even hate it.

For me, being able to do all of my house work when the time suits me is great. I take a lot of pride in my house and I like to be able to keep it clean, fix things here and there, mow the lawn, shovel the snow etc…

It’s great that not only do I have enough time to complete all these tasks, but I also am able to complete them when the time suits me. I don’t need to rush home from work to get dinner ready and rush to get the lawn mowed and the house cleaned all before bed time.

I do all these things leisurely throughout the day while working on my website as well.

10. No hassle from co-workers

Back-stabbing ColleaguesSo this could also be a little bit of a controversial one. I’ve met some of my best friends through jobs I’ve had over the years so it can be great.

But when deadlines are looming and you only seem to be bumping into the annoying co-workers, it can be a bad thing.

Every office has a few bad seeds and they tend to drive eveyone else crazy. This is something I don’t need to deal with anymore.

 Pitfalls of working from home

If I’m going to be talking about all the great things about working from home it’s only fair if I also mention some of the pitfalls.

1. Work follows you everywhere

So when I mentioned above how I have the freedom to work from anywhere and I can take long vacations and travel a lot, there is something I left out.

No matter where I go, I can’t get away from my work. Since I love my work this isn’t that big of a deal but even I agree that sometimes it’s a little much.

When my wife and I are on holiday I have to spend at least an hour a day doing little things for the website.

2. Need to be disciplined

Working from home really isn’t for everyone. Especially if you aren’t disciplined and motivated to get a lot of work done.

Some people actually benefit from having a boss push them and motivate them to get things done. Some people wouldn’t get anything done if there wasn’t someone helping them aloong.

If you’re that type of person, this might not be the way to go for you.

3. Not interacting with a lot of people

Just like I said before about how you don’t need to deal with annoying co-workers, this is the other side of the coin. It can get a little lonely home alone all day.

Sure you get to chat with people online but it’s not quite the same as dealing with people in real life. And forget trying to make real friends that you will hang out with on weekends. It is possible to make friends online but it’s unlikely that you’ll be from the same city.

4. No guarantee of money

Running your own website is being in business for yourself. With all the perks and benefits there is always the risk that you could have a bad month and not make very much money.

Just like with any business there are no guarantees. Some people need that security of a paycheque coming in every 2 weeks. If you’re one of those people you might not like affiliate marketing. however, you could always just do it on the side while keeping your regular day job.
